about
My first published Christmas song.
lyrics
We’ll soon gather back at home again, to recognize the birth
of a middle-eastern refugee - the way God came to earth.
And I’ve tried to make a wishlist, tried to find some things I need,
and this year, it has come easily to me.
From our brother, who each year is dreading badly to come home,
since he’s once more the only one arriving alone,
I wish you’d let us in and let us take part in your sorrow,
instead of staring at your phone and leave early tomorrow.
From our sister, always in control, with a flawless facade,
I wish that you’ll find comfort here and lower your guard.
We all know you’re actually a wreck, we see you’re oh, so tired.
You don’t have to be so strong here, you don’t even have to smile.
And dear grandmother, this year, I wish you offered us the truth
about what really happened in your youth.
And about that darker side to granddad no one ever mentioned,
but everybody sensed, as it filled up your home with tension.
On behalf of all the parents ‘round the world, also my own,
I am wishing for our children’s grace for all the wrongs we’ve done.
And this time we will restrain from the excuse “we did our best”
-as parents we need mercy nonetheless.
And I want our sons and daughters to grow up with healthy eyes,
so every time they’ll pass a mirror, they will see someone they like.
I wish they’ll never really need to hear how beautiful they are,
since their value is never questioned, it’s a never fading scar.
Could we agree to say this year “to hell with all this shame!”
-We all fall short somehow - sometimes we’re failures, all the same.
So, everybody ‘round the table - raise your hand like me
if you’ve been lying on the floor once, shaking with anxiety.
Yeah, at least a dozen times in life, this should be on our wishlist:
“The name and number of a great psychiatrist”.
From all of our annoying and frustrating family members,
I wish that you each day next year will actually remember
that you are precious to someone, how messed up you might be.
That’s what would make this holiday for me.
